Disruptive Innovation - Can You Teach an Old Dog New Tricks?

Updated: Mar 3

My takeaway after watching the various videos exploring disruptive innovation reminds me of the following saying, “You can not teach an old dog new tricks.” The irony of that particular saying is that the old dog in this instance is our brick-and-mortar public education system and the new trick is blended learning. The old dog, our brick-and-mortar public education system, is learning new tricks by utilizing blended learning! Mentioned throughout the videos there’s a highlight on the idea that disruptive innovation is oftentimes difficult to implement because when people or systems are used to the old way of doing things, especially with examples such as pen and paper, they aren’t comfortable with trying new things within technology until they see the benefits and reward (Clayton Christensen Institute, 2014).

This topic of disruptive innovation is fascinating because during and after COVID technology became an essential part of the private and public education system. Technology enabled students to be reached in an untraditional way outside of the brick-and-mortar classroom. This change was important because it has now accelerated the idea and practice of blended learning as students have reentered the brick-and-mortar environment in recent years. Now, the continuation of where they left off is more dire than ever. Let there be no mistake though blended learning does not look like a teacher using a smart TV for a lesson (Edmentum, 2013). Blended learning is utilizing technology in a way where our students in the brick-and-mortar environment have choice and ownership in their learning (Edmentum, 2013). As we further discuss disruptive innovation and blended learning I will share what blended learning exactly entails in future discussions.
