Futurist... to 'now ist'?

Updated: Mar 3

This post in particular goes out to all the habitual people who thrive on routine and planning ahead. Let’s dive into the interesting title selection; futurist… to ‘now ist’? Speaker Ito expresses that people need to take a step back from this idealist mindset of planning everything ahead, being prepared for the future, and instead live in the present moment and connect to what is important right now…learning now (Joshua Perry, 2015). I am not a ‘now ist’. I know that I am not a ‘now ist’, because I don’t feel in control of my life unless I plan ahead. I closely relate this feeling to the routine of teaching and when there are CTMs you are directed to plan ahead to stay ahead of the pacing guide. If I were a ‘now ist’ in a professional setting, I believe I’d be receiving write ups from administration for not being prepared. When you are an educator there really is no room for a ‘now ist’ mindset. That factor is reason enough why many educators can not adopt a new approach or simply live in the moment of their day to day work life. I think the ‘now ist’ mindset best serves one’s personal life, but when it comes to working professionally there isn’t room to slack, because there are other individuals on a team and their opinions matter too. Simply put, it is going to remain necessary to plan ahead to collaborate effectively in an educational work environment.
