My Perception of the Growth Mindset

Updated: Mar 3

I interpret the message of “yet” as being synonymous with the growth mindset and a lifelong learning process. The power of “yet” as described by Carol Dweck shows an ongoing message that a person does not fail, but instead that a person is still learning (Stanford Alumni, 2014). The growth mindset is the ability to change the way you learn, the way you receive feedback, or even how you present your attitudes (Tedx Talks, 2012). It is a powerful message that change is possible if you believe it is possible and are willing to change your mindset. Eduardo Briceno mentioned in his Tedx Talks that brain scans done on people who presented a growth mindset showed the most activity on their brain when receiving feedback about what they could do better next time (Tedx Talks, 2012). These same people are those who care about how they learn and not how they are judged (Tedx Talks, 2012).

Adopting a growth mindset can change the way I learn by allowing me to accept that mistakes and what I deem as failures are okay and a part of the process of growth. This will also help me accept feedback by knowing, even if I'm critiqued, that there is always room for improvement and a new way to learn different things. When I adopt a growth mindset and believe in my abilities I can teach my students the growth mindset too and I can help to empower my students to believe in themselves and their ability to learn.
