The Head Won’t Go Where the Heart Hasn’t Been

Traditionally speaking people are habitual creatures. Habitual in the sense that when the majority of people ask a question or want to learn about something new they will want to receive a factual answer in response. I know that when I ask a question or want to learn about something new I prefer a factual answer to help me understand the why behind my inquisition. Not everyone is like this though. There are plenty of other people in the world who prefer utilizing an affective domain when learning. People who utilize the affective domain are those who learn in a way that focuses on being more aware of certain ideas, actively responding to new ideas with appropriate attitudes, supporting and valuing these newly learned ideas, and these people are open to discussing and examining new ideas (Karin, n.d.). I think of it simply as being more emotionally responsive instead of relationally responsive, which is not a bad trait and I see the motivation for learning this way.

Now, in terms of behavior, learning, and changing then Dr. Kotter indicated that neurologists in the past have expressed how people have two pieces to them, one being their thinking and the other being an emotional piece (2011). He mentions that the greatest way to change someone is to appeal to their heart, their emotional piece, instead of their thinking and rationality (Kotter, 2011). I think that often times we confuse the two pieces of emotion and thinking and fall into a habit of trying to rationalize every aspect of our learning when it could be so simple to just let the learning process flow and allow everyone, children and adults, to just be in the moment, discuss, and value what it is that they are trying to learn.
